-Hester now does charity work and works with the poor and helps those who need it most; now all the towns people belive that the scarlet letter means Able not adultery.The narrator says how the Scarlet letter has not done what it was supost to because no one in the town interpts the A as it was ment to be.

- In the beginning of the story Hester is a strong, passionate, defiant woman, now seven years later Hester has changed in both appearance and personality. She looks worn and she has lost the passion she once felt. It is almost as if she is losing herself. She does not like how women and treated and dismissed in their society having no significance. Hester believes she has become the letter she wears.

- As Hester sees Chillingworth alone gathering herbs on the beach she decides to confront him about his tormenting of Dimmesdale. Hester believes that Chillingworth now knows the truth and asks him to stop. She continues to tell him that the sin can only be forgiven between herself and God.
