Reading Journal: Chapters 13-18
Pearl is now seven years old and the people in the town now interpret the letter A on Hester's chest as "Able'. I think this is really good, people are finally over the idea that Hester was a bad person and see her for who she is. Hester is a person who brings food to the poor, helps the sick, and will offer her services to anyone who needs it. I believe that people are shocked with how she is Able to be a single mom and help out those who need it. Hester also start to feel guilt about keeping the secret about Chillingworth to Dimmesdale because she believes this is causing Dimmesdale to lose his mind. So Hester decides that she will tell Dimmesdale that Chillingworth is her husband. Hester believes that if she tells him he will get better.
Hester goes into the forest and sees Chillingworth there and decides to talk to him. Hester says hoe Chillingworth needs to let Dimmesdale go. Chillingworth says how he is not the cause of Dimmesdale's sickness, which is false. If Chillingworth would have never come into Dimmesdale's life than his sin of being the adultery would not affect him as much as it does now. Dimmesdale would still have some guilt but not having the daily reminder of what he did would save his mental and physical heath. The narrator talks bout how Chillingworth has changed in appearance. He says the old phasican has a look of evil. This shows who Chillingworth really is. The more the novel goes on the more we relives who the true Roger Chillingworth is. Chillingworth is obsessed with Dimmesdale and making him suffer of what he did, and Chillingworth knows that if he makes Dimmesdale hurt it will also affect Hester because she love Dimmesdale.
Chillingworth leaves and Hester calls her daughter Pearl to come back. Pearl comes running over with a green A on her chest. Her mother is shocked at this and asks her if she knows the meaning of the letter. I think this is crazy. Pearl is a devisoe child and wants to know what the scarlet letter means. Pearl does things that she knows will get her the answers that she wants. For example Pearl knew that by making her own version of the scarlet letter will make her mother question her about it and its meaning. It works for a certain length until Pearl makes the connection between the scarlet A and Dimmesdale holding his chest. Pearl will not let it go until she gets the answer she wants.
Hester goes to the forest to talk to Dimmesdale; She knows that he will be passing through it on the way to his home. As Hester and Pearl are weighting Pearl notices how the sun will not go near her mother. Pearl thinks it has something to do with the scarlet letter, she says how it runs in fear from her mother. Hester try's to explain how this is not true but when she goes and touch the sun it goes away. Then Pearl is courous about the "Black Man". Pearl had over heard some women in the town talking about how Hester's Scarlet letter is the "Black Mans" mark on her. Pearl is still trying to get her mother to tell her about the letter. Hester does not say anything; then a figure is coming out of the forest and Pearl asks her mother is its the "Black Man". Pearl keeps asking this until Hester says no its the minister. Pearl then jumps to the conclusion that Dimmesdale holds his chest because the "Black Man" has left the mark on him also. Hester makes Pearl leave so that She can talk to Dimmesdale alone.
Pearl finally leaves and Hester and Dimmesdale go and sit down together. When they do Hester tells Dimmesdale the truth about Chillingworth, and when she does Dimmesdale is extremely mad. His reaction was a little over rated because he started to blame Hester for his torcher. But really it was also Dimmesdale's fault. If Dimmesdale would have not trusted anyone than he would not have to torment of Chillingworth with him all the time. Dimmesdale forgives Hester and explains how Chillingworth has committed a bigger sin than either of them have. Chillingworth is obsessed with getting revenge on both Hester and Dimmesdale. This is a bigger sin because Chillingworth is physically hurting both Hester an Dimmesdale with doing actions that eat away at Their souls.
Hester tells Dimmesdale that is they are to run away together then they will be able to escape this torture once and for all. Hester suggest that they go to England together to have a family. At first Dimmesdale is not sure test he want to do that because of all the hard work he was put into this community; which to me seem selfish. If he cared about Hester as much as he seams to then he would go to England with Hester and Pearl. The more that Hester try's to convince Dimmesdale to go the more he decide to go. When they both say this is what they are going to do Hester takes off her Scarlet Letter an lets her Hair down, and Dimmesdale says that he feels better and does not have the weight of this on his shoulders anymore. This is a big deal, not only do they feel better but the sun that was once afraid of Hester now loves her and shins on her. This is almost let a curse that has lived opond this two is now lifted and everything makes them feel better.
