Reading Journals: Chapters 19-24
Now that Hester and Dimmesdale have planed on going to England together as a family with their daughter Pearl, Dimmesdale is finally going to met his daughter. When Hester calls Pearl over she takes he time and does not rush over like she normally does because she knows something is up with her mother and Dimmesdale. When Pearl gets to the other side of the brook she stops and won't cross it. Hester is getting anger and frustrated that Pearl is not lessoning to her; Hester keeps calling and calling Pearl until Pearl starts to throw a tamper tantrum. Hester then says "Children will not abide any, the slightest, change in the accustomed aspect of things that are daily before their eyes. Pearl misses something which she has always seen me wear!". Pearl would not come to Hester because she did not recognize her mother with her hair down and without her scarlet letter. Pearl finally comes over to greets her mother and kisses the scarlet letter and Hester get very upset with this in thinking her daughter is mocking her.
Dimmesdale leaves and cannot believe that they are moving to England, the reason that the two chose England was because they thought that is would have a better environment for Dimmesdale's fragile state of being. It is good that they are leaving because they need to escape the scarlet letter and go to a place that knows nothing about this letter or its meaning. It seams that everything from this point on was to be different. Dimmesdale is now to have new energy to do things. for example it says how the walk for the woods seemed to be shorter and he did not run out of energy. He also said how everything did not look as worn down. Like the path to the forest is wider and less worn down then he last remember it to be, which was two days before. This shows that the scarlet letter was almost like a cruse, now that Dimmesdale is going to live with is family everything is better and the whole town is less gloomy than it was before.
Just as the novel began with the people gathered in the market place, the people are back but not to judge Hester but to appoint a new mayor for the town. the connotation of this sense is changed from the last one. Hester is now in the crowd watching instead of being judged. as this is going on one of the sailors form the ship that is going to take them to England approaches Hester and tells her that Chillingworth is now going to be sailing with them, because the ship needs a doctor and he is the only doctor that would be able to go. Hester is shocked to hear this because neither herself or Dimmesdale would have told Chillingworth this information. This the true nature of Chillingworth. He lives on ruining Dimmesdale's life. This man needs to have someone to torcher. When the sailor tells Hester this she looks up and sees her husband standing their smiling at her.
Hester is upset to see the power of the puritan society. This is crazy because puritans are support to not have a lot of items but this goes complete opposite what they believe. The witch of the town comes and talks to Hester about Dimmesdale and how he will reveal something soon, she also asks Pearl to go on a witch ride with her. This will never happen because she will soon be executed because of being a witch. This women leave and Pearl comes up and says how Chillingworth will bring Dimmesdale on the ship and all Hester has to worried about is herself and Pearl. Hester is thinking about this and maybe it is not a good idea when suddly Hester notices that everyone is staring at her. This would be a weird thing to feel epically since it is not just people who know the meaning of the scarlet letter but the whole crowd of people. You can infer that it has something to do with Dimmesdale's sermon, in the last chapter the narrator said how Dimmesdale re-wrote the sermon he was to give but we do not know what he wrote so he may have confessed that he is the father of Pearl.
People are exiting the Meeting house and saying how good the ministers sermon was. Dimmesdale Is one of the last to exit it house and sees Hester standing by the scaffolding and grabs HEster and Pearl by the hand and takes them up on the scaffolding with him. Chillingworth is on the side yelling to Dimmesdale not to do what he is going to do. Chillingworth knows that if Dimmesdale does this that he can no longer torcher Dimmesdale which will make him go crazy. Dimmesdale ignores Chillingworth and walks up and says “the one sinner of the world.” after he talks about that he say like Hester he has a red letter also and rips open his shirt and shows something that is marked on his chest. The narrator does not tell us what it is but you can infer that it is a scarlet letter that looks like the one Hester has to wear. After Dimmesdale does this he falls to the scaffolding were Peal gives him a kiss on the cheek. Pearl love Dimmesdale now because he was standing with them on the scaffolding. Hester asks Dimmesdale is they will live together in the after life and HE replies that it is up for God to decide what happens to them. Dimmesdale then dies. A year latter Chillingworth dies because he does not have Dimmesdale to hurt anymore. The peoples way of life go back and Pearl get a Husband who is older than she is much like her mother. Which makes me think will this happen all over again?
