Reading Journals: Chapters 7-12
Hester and Pearl go to the governors mansion for a couple reasons: the first being that Hester had to give the Governor his embroidered gloves back to him and the second is to see if the rumors about the clergy taking Pearl away because of her demon child like behavior. As they are walking to town there is a group of kids that start throw mud at Hester and Pearl, that's when Pearl got upset and chased the kids away. That is one example of Pearls anger problems. When they get to the Governors mansion they see all his family's portraits and armor from when he fought in war. Pearl was obsessed with the armor because she could see herself in it. When she called her mother over to tell her she can see herself she has Hester look and when she does Hester is astonished about the scarlet letter with how big it is and how the portions were off and all she could focus on was the scarlet letter When Hester looked in the armor all she could see was the scarlet letter. It was almost like Hawthorne did this on purpose; to make a point that the scarlet letter is all of Hester's life and her life revolves around the scarlet letter. After all of the attention now off of the armor Hester goes to how Pearl the pretty roses outside. When she saw them Pearl wanted a red rose and started crying for one. Her mother tried to calm her down because she could hear the Governor coming with other men, but before Pearl became quite she let out a "...eldritch scream...". This goes to show that Pearl does things her way. When she screamed like that it would have startled some people in thinking that Hester might have hurt her child.
The clergy men, Which are Bellingham, Wilson, Chillingworth, and Dimmesdale, all enter into the room were Hester and Pearl are at. They start to discus the care for the child. They ask Hester why she should be able to keep Pearl and she tells them how she can teach Pearl a lesson that Hester learned the hard way. Hester says how she learns from the scarlet letter daily and she will be able to teach Pearl the things she has leaned. Once Hester has tried to prove he point Revenand Wilson talks to Pearl and asks her who her creator is; they were hoping she would say God but did not instead she said that Hester picked Pearl from a wild-rose bush that grows by a prison door. Not knowing what to do Hester asks Dimmesdale to speak for Herself and Pearl. Dimmesdale convinces everyone that God gave Hester Pearl for a reason and they can not go against God and his intions. Pearl, then takes Dimmesdale's hand and puts it on her face, and Dimmesdale was shocked at this fact. This is another example of how Pearl knows things without actually knowing them. As Hester and Pearl were leaving the governors house, the governors sister asks Hester if she will come to the forest and sign her name in the Black mans book. Hester denies because she has to take care of Pearl, but that get me wondering if Hester's Pearl did get taken away would Hester have one to the forest to sing her name?
Dimmesdale's heath is fading fast and the people of the town are concerned for him. The people thought it would be good for Dimmesdale to marry one of the women at the church so they can take care of him. Dimmesdale refuses to marry, so Roger Chillingworth offers to live with Dimmesdale so he can treat the holy minister. Roger is known to be the towns physician, so no one had a problem with Roger living with Dimmesdale. No one knows that Roger is Hester's husband and the people of the town are starting to believe that Roger is the Devil coming to clam Dimmesdale's soul. People are thinking this because the more revenge Roger wants on Hester and the more obsessed he becomes with figuring out Dimmesdale's secret the more evil he looks.
Chillingworth has now made it is mission in life to figure out what secret Dimmesdale is hiding. Dimmesdale has grown suspices of all men and does not trust anyone so Chillingworth has to work even harder to make sure Dimmesdale trust him so he can figure out the secret. Dimmesdale walks into Chillingworth study and asks about the plant that is one his table. Chillingworth found it on the grave of a sinner who did not repent the sin and how burding your sin is a bad idea and will kill you. The two men got into an argument about sin and the burden of it and how sometimes it is better not to confess. when they were arguing Hester and Pearl we outside walking past their house. When Pearl saw they were watching them she says "Come away mother! Come away, or yonder old Black Man will catch you! He hath got hold of the minister already. Come away, mother, or he will catch you! But he cannot catch little Pearl!". Pearl refers to Chillingworth as the Black Man, also known as the devil. She knows that their is something evil with that man otherwise she would have never said it. After that Dimmesdale falls asleep and Chillingworth goes and sees something on his chest so he pulls back the fabric and sees something, smiles and walks away. You can infer two things when this happens: the first is that Chillingworth found something he was looking for and the second one is that Dimmesdale had something on his chest, like a A that has been brinded into his skin so he will never forget what he did.
Now the Chillingworth knows something what I wrong with Dimmesdale he keep picking away at his soul and saying this comments that make Dimmesdale question what the sin he has committed. Now That Dimmesdale has the guilt of the his sin he has been he having sermons which are about sin. The people in his minastaty are having these connections with him now, it is almost like Dimmesdale has become a natural man with the rest of the people in his ministry. He aslo say to himself how he will go into the pulpit and will not come down until ha has confessed to the ministry what he has down, but each time fails to keep his promise. This shows how Dimmesdale is really a coward and has to and much pride to be brought down with shame. As the end of this chapter Dimmesdale goes to the scaffolding and stands their because his guilt is so strong and hurting him so much. Dimmesdale standing on the site were Hester and Pearl stood at the beginning of the novel. He lets out a scream in the middle of the night, but no one is concerned they believed it was a witch this shows the hypocrisy of the society; which shows that they are accepting of witches but not adultery. The governor dies in the middle of the night, then an A appears in the sky most of the time the people believe it signifies an angel but Dimmesdale knows it is for him.
