Chapter 19:
71. Why is Pearl unable to share her mother's joy over the Scarlet Letter's removal? Why does she insist that Hester put the Scarlet Letter on again? Why does she reject Dimmesdale's kiss?
- When Pearl first sees her mother without the scarlet letter on her chest she does not know who it is. Hester says "Children will not abide any, the slightest, change in the accustomed aspect of things that are daily before their eyes. Pearl misses something which she has always seen me wear!". Pearl makes her mother put the scarlet letter back on because Hester is the one who committed the crime and it is he sin to wear and no one else's. When Dimmesdale try's to kiss Pearl, she runs away because he will not walk into tow with Hester and her self. This is very similar to the time when Dimmesdale is holding the hand of Pearl on the Scaffolding; she asks him if he will stand with them come noontide and he tells her not let but one day he will. When he said that she took her hand away and would not let Dimmesdale hold her hand, so it is the same concept with the kiss. Since Dimmesdale wouldn't walk into town with Hester and herself she will not except Dimmesdale's kiss.
