-The phrase "duplicity of impression" means that you are not who you appear to be as with him, Dimmesdale. He is in the eyes community a minister who is a pillar of virtue and moral guidance. Yet we know that he is a sinner and is human and flowed just like his fellow church members. This can be seen as a tragic flow since the people who are preaching how we should live and not following their words. they are leading with the belief that what they speak is how our lives should be lived.
